27×7′s Sports Musings: Earnhardt Rising, Carter Condolences, LeBron Not The Best, Catchers Hurting And Twins Falling

by Bill Bradley on May 30, 2011

What we learned – or can’t understand – from this past weekend in sports:

* Despite running out of fuel on the final lap of Coca-Cola 600, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is on his way back to winning soon. You can’t compete for a top spot in a marathon race like that unless your team is working on all cylinders.

* Our condolences go to Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, who has multiple brain tumors. More than his World Series victory with the 1986 Mets, he should remembered for being the heart and soul of the Montreal Expos for many years. In many ways, he made the Expos worth watching.

* This weekend’s debate is maddening. LeBron James is not as good as Michael Jordan. Jordan was the best NBA player of all time. Hands down. That won’t change until James wins his sixth NBA title, let alone his first. There is no other argument.

* If high school baseball and college ball make it illegal to cause a collision with the catcher, how hard is it for Major League Baseball to outlaw those plays at the plate? And none of these unwritten rules. With the news that San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey is officially out for the season, this rule change needs to be pounded onto parchment.

* If you know someone who picked the Minnesota Twins to have the worst record in baseball at Memorial Day, then you should also get a rapture day prediction from them. The Twins entered the season with all of the earmarks of repeating as AL Central champions for the third consecutive year.
