Jig May Be Up for BCS As Feds Ask About College Football Playoff

by Bill Bradley on May 4, 2011

It’s all unraveling for the scam known as the BCS.

In the past month, the Fiesta Bowl had to clean house because of illegal activities and the Bowl Championship Series heard that the Utah attorney general was ready to file an anti-trust lawsuit against the college football entity.

All of that was trumped Wednesday when the U.S. Justice department asked the NCAA a simple question: Why don’t you have a college football playoff system in Division I-A?

Funny how every other sport at every other level of the NCAA has a playoff system. So how will the NCAA respond after it is done hemming and hawing and umming?

The NCAA will respond that it will go to a playoff if the major schools want one. The NCAA will say that the BCS has been running the Football Bowl Championship postseason, so ask them about it. And the NCAA will say how such a playoff would take away from the true mission of academics.

Funny, though, how those excuses don’t hold much water these days. Saying the playoff will be added if big schools want one is glossing over the fact that the big schools are keeping their thumb on the smaller Division I conferences, like the MAC and WAC and Mountain West conferences. Pointing the Feds to the BCS is like telling them that the inmates are running the postseason asylum. And funny how football in Divisions I-AA, II and III have no problem getting to classes while playing a 16-team playoff right after the season.

It all boils down to the NCAA and BCS trying to preserve the cash cow known as the bowl system. The bowls have created their own tier of have and have-nots. They have created an uneven playing field in college football for decades.

Both the NCAA and the BCS better buckle their seat belts because it’s going to be a bumpy ride for the next few years now that the Feds are involved. And chances are that neither the NCAA nor the BCS are going to like where the ride ends.
