I thought it was bad when the landlords of the Arizona Cardinals’ stadium considered “Pink Taco” for naming rights.
The Oakland County sports authorities Wednesday approved Overstock.com as the new naming sponsor for Oakland Alameda County Coliseum. The home of the A’s and the Raiders will now be known as Overstock.com Coliseum.
Well, maybe it isn’t as bad as “Pink Taco Stadium,” but Overstock.com Coliseum is ripe for all sorts of jokes.
Will I be able to by quality bedding right after the next A’s home game? Will members of the Black Hole get 10 percent off jewelry before each Raiders game? Will there be free shipping to and from the stadium?
And the company’s slogan, “Look for the O,” brings a whole different level of ways to poke fun at the Coliseum’s tenants, but we won’t go there since this is a family website.
Joke as we must about the deal, it will bring Oakland and only Oakland about $7.5 million over six years. Neither Raiders owner Al Davis nor A’s owner Lewis Wolff will see any of that money.
Oh, excuse me, O!, the name could change to O.co Coliseum in a few years because the mail-order retail giant is rebranding to be called O.co.
Hmmm. Will the Raiders sell discount seats at halftime at Overstock.com? This deal might be great to fill in those empty sections on Mount Davis.
By the way, Pink Taco wouldn’t have worked too well for the Cardinals. The chain pulled out of Arizona two years after the NFL team moved into its new stadium.
